Even the keenest blade will dull after plenty of use; regular honing with a good steel is essential to keep kitchen knives performing to their full potential. Measuring ten inches long, this sharpening steel is long enough for even the most massive chef’s knife. It’s handcrafted with a long-lasting steel rod and a solid walnut handle to match the rest of Chicago’s Walnut Tradition line of cutlery. To hone, simply hold the steel vertically with the tip pressed against a stable surface. Place a knife on the steel at a 20- to 40-degree angle and draw the blade along the length of the steel, pulling the knife towards you as you go. For best results, steel knives before or after each use to maintain a razor-sharp edge and prolong the life of your knives. –Mary Park

  • This is a grooved, rather than a straight steel. This means it is taking significant portions of metal off your edge with each pass (that’s the job of a sharpening tool, not a honing tool!). The grooves risk significant damage to your blade. The grooving is sort of apparent from the photo, but it should be made more explicit. Consider yourself forewarned!

  • I really needed this sharpening steel and it was hard to find this particular type at my local discount store. I took my knives to a hardware store to have them sharpened for $2 each. I will not go there again. They didn’t stay sharp for very long. This steel is great. I can do it myself and my knives are sharper now than before.

  • This sharpener works well. A few passes of a knife on this sharpener and a usable edge will be back
